xxonMobil Cepu Limited aims to finish drilling three infill carbonate wells and two clastic wells in the Banyu Urip Field of East Java’s Cepu Block by the end of 2025, as the last five of seven planned wells.

“We are working on five drilling projects in the Banyu Urip Field. Hopefully, we can finish these projects before the end of this year,” Muhammad Nurdin, senior vice president of production at ExxonMobil Cepu, told reporters at a breaking of the fast gathering in Jakarta on Wednesday.

The five new wells are expected to go onstream in 2026.

Infill carbonate wells are drilled in existing oil fields to increase production and specifically target carbonate reservoirs. Clastic wells are drilled into clastic rock formations that can potentially hold porous and permeable reservoirs, and are thus often used in oil and gas exploration and production.

Last year, the local subsidiary of United States-based ExxonMobil Corporation finished drilling two other infill carbonate wells that have since produced around 14,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd), according to Nurdin.

He added that the Cepu Block had produced 155,000 bopd to date.

“That's approximately 24 million liters of oil per day from the Cepu Block. That’s roughly equal to 25 percent of national oil production [...],” he said. “The achievement, of course, does not make us complacent.”
