lectronic duo Gabber Modus Operandi suspends activities and hires mediator to process the investigations following sexual violence allegations against its member.
Famed Indonesian experimental electronic duo Gabber Modus Operandi has canceled their tour following sexual violence allegations that have recently circulated toward an unnamed member.
The experimental outfit, hailed for its hardcore electronic “gabber” noise infused in traditional Indonesian sounds, took to Instagram to apologize for the “inconvenience caused by the alleged sexual violence act in 2019 that occurred to one of our members.”
But the duo, comprising Ican Harem and Kasimyn, have not been able to disclose the allegations in order to “protect the victim because, to this day, the alleged victim [has] not submitted a complaint report to us,” the Instagram post states. Regardless, the duo assumes “full responsibility for any consequences caused by such events.”
In the Instagram post, it was explained that the alleged victim mentioned one of the members on Twitter on Aug. 9 about an alleged sexual violence act that happened in 2019. The tweet has been deleted, but the screenshots of the tweet have made the rounds to “private channels.”
According to the Twitter post, the duo took steps to conduct investigations on Aug. 13 by “requesting information directly from the alleged suspect.” They also attempted to contact the complainant and seek “information about the justice and redress [the complainant] sought with the help of intermediaries,” to no avail.
Meanwhile, the unnamed member is said to have taken “three counseling sessions with professionals to understand the situation and the possible impact better.”
The duo also hired a professional mediator to investigate the alleged victim’s complaints and resolve the case.
“We believe that the truth belongs to the victim. To this end, we are committed to listening to the demands and needs of the alleged victim,” the Twitter post states.
With 17 years of advocating for victims of violence against women, the mediator, Ditta Wisnu, is stated to work on the case for one week from Aug. 25 to Sept. 1. Gabber Modus Operandi has, in effect, canceled its Canadian tour and other planned activities during the investigation period.
Famous for paving the way for the Indonesian “gabber” genre and subculture, Gabber Modus Operandi is a Bali-based experimental music duo, having played in big festivals across the globe. They have recently made waves for collaborating with legendary Icelandic singer-songwriter Björk on her upcoming tenth album, Fossora.
