The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) East Java office is considering offering its own politician as the running mate of former East Java governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa for her potential reelection in November, as rival parties move closer to nominating Khofifah and her former deputy governor Emil Dardak instead.
Khofifah is an outsider to the PDI-P, among the largest parties in East Java. The PDI-P backed Khofifah’s rival in 2018, but recently has been flirting with the idea of backing her reelection this year.
Khofifah is a Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) figure who temporarily stepped down from her role as the head of Muslimat NU, the women's wing of the NU, earlier this year when she campaigned for the eventual presidential winner Prabowo Subianto of the Gerindra Party, a rival of the PDI-P.
The potential pairing of Khofifah-Emil has already won early support from Gerindra, and just recently secured formal endorsement from three other pro-Prabowo parties: the Golkar Party, the National Mandate Party (PAN) and the Democratic Party.

PDI-P East Java office chairman Said Abdullah, who is also a House of Representatives lawmaker, said the party would not mind seeing rival parties working to nominate Khofifah and Emil.
“What is important is the end game – that Khofifah accepts a PDI-P candidate as her running mate,” he said on the sidelines of House meetings on Wednesday.
