ount Raung and Mount Semeru, two volcanoes situated roughly 120 kilometers apart in East Java, erupted on Thursday, unleashing towering ash columns that soared hundreds of meters into the sky.

Mount Raung, located on the border of Banyuwangi, Bondowoso and Jember regencies, erupted around 7:00 a.m., sending an ash column 1,500 meters above the summit. The thick gray plume reached an altitude of 4,832 meters above sea level and drifted west and northwest.

"Seismic data recorded a maximum amplitude of 7 millimeters, with the eruption lasting 34 seconds," Raung observation post official Burhan Alethea said in a statement on Thursday.

He also urged residents, visitors and tourists to stay at least 3 km from the mountain summit and refrain from camping overnight near the volcano’s crater and calderas."

Thursday's eruption was Mount Raung’s first of the year, following its last eruption on Dec. 24, which caused ashfall in several villages around the volcano.

Geology Agency Head Muhammad Wafid said that the Mt. Raung status remained at the Level II waspada (advisory) on the four-tier volcano alert system.
