T

he vocalist of Yogyakarta-based ska band Shaggydog, Heruwa, has returned with a new digital single. Dubbed “Senyawa Alam”, it will be released digitally by DoggyHouse Records on April 3.

Listening to the new single may remind you of Heruwa’s 2016 instrumental single, “Samiya”, for which he collaborated with Superman Is Dead (SID) drummer Jerinx. Both tracks embrace the environment as their main theme.

During the making of the single, both Heruwa and the vocalist of a Yogyakarta-based pop punk band, Erix Soekamti, were encouraged to record and gather the sounds of nature at Mount Merapi, Tugu, Kraton, Panggung Krapyak and Laut Selatan.

This also includes the sound of Mt. Merapi’s volcanic rocks hitting each other, the sounds of angklung played by street musicians at the Titik Nol (Point Zero) area in Yogyakarta and the sound of percussion made from a cadik (outrigger boat).

“I was challenged to be a ‘magician’ for this project,” said Heruwa in a press release. “I recorded everything that I saw on the street with Erix Soekamti, for instance the sound of a porridge seller’s bowls turned into a ‘gamelan’. Yes, it all went unplanned.”

“Senyawa Alam” was also used as the background song for the Diplomat Mild #ProjectPassion ad. The video also shows the recording process. (asw)
