ogyakarta-based ska band Shaggydog vocalist Heruwa and Bali-based punk rock band Superman Is Dead (SID) drummer Jerinx have collaborated for a single to be released on the radio on July 23 to commemorate National Children's Day.
Dubbed “Samiya”, a Sanskrit word for balance, this instrumental single combines electronic, gamelan sounds, and Jerinx’s unique drum-playing. Its digital format was released last year, while the cassette version was released in March.

The single was produced to raise awareness on environmental issues in the country, especially those in their hometowns. Heruwa supports Jogja Ora Di Dol (Don’t Sell Jogja), a movement that prevents rapid development in water catchment areas. Meanwhile, Jerinx actively rejects the reclamation in Benoa Bay, a mangrove conservation area, through Bali Tolak Reklamasi (Bali Rejects Reclamation). By releasing the single on National Children's Day, they are hopeful that it can serve as a reminder that people should preserve nature so that the younger generation will have the opportunity to also enjoy it in the future.
A documentary about the single, titled Behind The Scene of Samiya, made by Lana Pranaya is available on YouTube. (kes)
