T

he official trailer for Bumi Manusia (This Earth of Mankind), a movie adapted from Pramoedya Ananta Toer’s novel of the same title, was released on Thursday.

The trailer shows how Minke (Iqbaal Ramadhan) meets Annelies Mellema (Mawar de Jongh) for the first time and their story develops amid the Dutch occupation era in Indonesia in the early 20th century. Minke is a Javanese native, while Annelies is half-Dutch and half-Javanese, whose mother is a nyai (a colonial term of address for a concubine) named Nyai Ontosoroh (Sha Ine Febriyanti).

Minke’s father disapproves of his son’s close relationship with a member of Nyai Ontosoroh's family, a woman regarded as a reflection of modernism as she dares to fight against the hegemony of colonialism.

Helmed by Hanung Bramantyo, Bumi Manusia also features Donny Damara and Ayu Laksmi.

The film is scheduled to hit local cinemas on Aug. 15. (wir/kes)
