Indonesia opens chance of winning bodybuilding golds

Indonesia's bodybuilding team at the Asian Beach Games moved a step closer to winning gold following their passage to the final in their respective divisions Sunday.

All but one of the fivestrong Indonesian team made it to the final, but only two gold medals are expected from Asrelawandi and Syafrizaldi.

Contesting the welterweight (75 kilograms), Syafrizaldi will face Yoshihiro Yano of Japan, Zaw Thein of Myanmar, Kongthit Hanchaiyutthakorn of Thailand, Lam Chak Leung of Hong Kong, Kim Myung Sub of South Korea and Muhammad Imran Qureshi of Pakistan in the final Monday.

Syafrizaldi said he hoped to make amends for his loss at the recent Asian bodybuilding championship in Hong Kong.

Having joined national training in Jakarta after the Doha Asian Games in 2006, Syafrizaldi said he was prepared for the final.

Asrelawandi outshone seven bodybuilders in the early stage of the flyweight (60 kilograms) category Sunday, and will challenge Daejit Singh of India, Kuk Hyun Jung of South Korea, Kazumi Kokubo of Japan, Mach Pham Van of Vietnam and Jiraphan Pongkam of Thailand in Monday's final.

Indonesia's best bodybuilder in the light middleweight, Hendra, will compete against Kim Chong Won of South Korea, Naing Aung Swe of Myanmar, Ali Mohammad of Jordania, Sitthi Charoenrith of Thailand, Haji Saban Al-Balushi of Oman and Masashi Suzuki of Japan.

In the middleweight, Yefta Leonidas opened up another chance of winning gold. Lightweight Taat Pribadi was the only Indonesian bodybuilder who failed to reach the final. -- JP/Indah Setiawati
