Rescue team recover four in boat collision

As of Friday afternoon, a search and rescue team only managed to recover four bodies from the deadly collision that occured Thursday morning between a cargo ship and a tugboat in the Thousand Islands regency, north of Jakarta.

The four bodies belonged to 3-year-old Samuel, Waston, Nasim and Dedi Supriadi.

Samuel’s body was found Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the waters located near the accident, between Damar and Edam islands, while the body of Waston, the captain of the sunken vessel KM Rimba Segara 3, was found at 7 p.m. The body of the boat cook Hasyim was recovered on Friday morning in one of the KM Rimba’s rooms.

“The rescue diving team found him at 9.35 a.m. buoyed near the ceiling of a vessel room,” Sunaryo, head of Thousand Islands Red Cross, said Friday.

Sarjono, from the Tanjung Priok Red Cross, said the rescue team found the fourth body, later identified as assistant captain Dedi Supriadi, at 4 p.m. Friday.

Some of the bodies were swollen due to long exposure to seawater, and all were brought to Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital’s morgue.

Rescue divers stopped searching for bodies at 6 p.m., their visibility hampered by a strong undercurrent and an oil spill.

“It’s hard to dive in such difficult conditions,” said a rescue team member.

The vessel sank in 26 meters of water.

The team, made up of officers from the Navy, police and the national search and rescue body, will continue the search for seven more days.

“Should we fail to find the missing people, we will have to stop the search. That’s our standard operating procedure,” said team member Suyatno, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

The team confirmed nine crew were still missing, as opposed to 16 reported missing in Friday’s news reports.

Coordinator of the Red Cross team Sulistiyo Widodo told The Jakarta Post that the missing persons were Haurol, Beny Runtunewa, Rais, Bambang Jatmiko, Akbar, Erson, Hairul, Mario and Bowo.

“So far, we’ve found 13 survivors from the sunken vessel,” Sulistiyo said.

Officials reported that the KM Rimba left Tanjung Priok Port on Wednesday and was heading to Belawan in Medan, North Sumatra, before the collision. The vessel, which was carrying passen- gers and cement sacks, collided head on with KM Harapan Indah, a vessel tugging another boat carrying sand from Lampung.

National Committee for Transportation Safety (KNKT) spokesman J.A. Barata said earlier that his office was focusing on the search and rescue efforts.

“After the search, we will try to find out the cause of the accident,” Barata said.
