Brilliant Indonesian Students

Your comments on the brilliant students, mostly winning international science Olympiads, who prefer to study in Singapore and other countries due to less attractive facilities offered by the Indonesian government.

None of universities in Indonesia is included in the 100 best universities in the world. So there are two reasons why those brilliant students study abroad, like in Singapore. First, they look for better facilities, so that they can do their best to enrich their knowledge. Second, they will have better opportunities to get a good job when they finish their studies. It makes sense. Everybody wants to have a better life.

We must admit that universities in Singapore (even in Malaysia) provide a better study environment compared to that in Indonesian. But, in terms of quality, some prominent Indonesian universities rank far higher than those in Malaysia, while those in Singapore are simply above ours.

The government, as far as I understand it, has repeatedly offered these students scholarships to go to universities anywhere in the world. We cannot compete (yet) with what the Singapore government offers them. To me, as long as they come back to Indonesia after they finish their studies, it is not a big deal.

It is mainly because the education system in Indonesia is not as good as Singapore's. Brilliant Indonesian students, who win international science Olympiads, will also have brighter futures if they study at Singapore universities.

The Indonesia government does not guarantee that the talents and brilliant minds of these great students will be used as meaningful resources for the sake of Indonesia's future development. Thus, leaving Indonesia and getting better educational benefits in other countries will be better for these brilliant students, but not for Indonesia.

It is hard to deny that many Indonesian students prefer to study, work and contribute to Singapore's success. Singapore is known as a multicultural country, where competition is fierce among the people who live there.

The Singapore government is seeking global talent, including Indonesians, because they believe they could help the country continue improving. To convince this talent, the Singapore government uses various ways such as offering better salaries than they could get in their home countries, comfortable living standards and even citizenship.

Many Indonesian students from senior high schools win international Science Olympiads, but not from universities. Therefore many rich people still want to study here, particularly due to the much higher costs if they study abroad.

Some Singapore universities, as well as universities in other countries, give interesting scholarships and students there are able to find part-time jobs to support their studies. Therefore more and more Indonesian students want to study abroad. They think their lecturers have better qualifications and they hope they will have better grasp of English after finishing their studies.

I think it is true. I stayed in Singapore for more than four years. My impression was that education in Singapore is very good. There are not only brilliant university students from all over the world who study there, but also many who are still in primary and secondary schools, particularly, who have brilliant IQs.

Apart from there being a lack of incentive and facilities from the government, the atmosphere is not too conducive either. Brilliant students do not get support from their surroundings and face harsh treatment for being "weird" because of their talents.

I know there are a lot of brilliant students from Indonesia who choose to study in Singapore, and, more importantly, the Singapore government encourages them to take Singapore citizenship after graduating to work in Singapore.
