AKARTA: The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has named Indonesia's handmade batik as world heritage.
"The UNESCO will make the official announcement on Oct. 2," Suliantoro Sulaiman, head of the Sekar Jagad Foundation that specializes in the art of batik, said in Yogyakarta on Wednesday.
The foundation, alongside the Indonesia Trade Office and the Indonesia Batik museum, competed against other batik producing countries to be included on the UNESCO's world heritage list.
