growing number of countries have announced plans to recognize a Palestinian state, earning praise from Indonesia, which has urged others to follow suit in a bid to help secure lasting peace in Gaza.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Tuesday the United Kingdom would recognize a Palestinian state in September. Israel must “end the appalling situation in Gaza, agree to a ceasefire and commit to a long-term, sustainable peace, reviving the prospect of” a two-state solution, he said, as quoted from a press statement from his office.
The UK joins France as another major European country and the second Western power with permanent seats on the United Nations Security Council to announce a plan to recognize Palestine. Last week, French President Emmanuel Macron said that his country also intended to do so at an upcoming UN General Assembly meeting in September.
Responding to the UK’s plan, the Foreign Ministry in Jakarta said on Wednesday that Indonesia welcomed the planned recognition of Palestine by the UK.
“The Palestinian people’s right to self-determination and statehood is inalienable under international law. Recognition must not be made conditional,” the ministry said on X.
The ministry urged other countries to follow the UK, in line with its commitment to push for a two-state solution where an independent Palestinian state, with East Jerusalem as its capital, coexists peacefully with Israel in line with internationally agreed parameters.
Indonesia also noted that more permanent members of the UN Security Council had affirmed Palestine’s statehood, saying that UK’s plan “marks a significant step toward Palestine’s admission as a full member of the UN”.
