The high-school children making up the Indonesian team comprised (from left to right) Evelyn Antoinette Halim from SMA Bina Bangsa, Jakarta, Lita Gunawan from SMA Kristen Yahya, Bandung, Christa Yona Twedrian from SMA Regina Pacis, Bogor, Rizky Satrio Nugroho from Madania Progressive Indonesian School, Bogor, Asyraf Firas Abdurrasyid from SMAN 1, Bandung and Wismaya Adi Purnama from SMA Taruna Nusantara, Magelang.
For the competition, the students designed a Rp 67.5 million investment project that proposed manufacturing plates with a printed message about ending hunger.
Their venture was called D’Spoon Inc. and it promised a 20 percent return on investment. The Indonesian team, the first Asian team to win the international award, was selected and coached by the United in Diversity organization and the Surya Institute, renowned for training young Indonesians to win Olympic science awards.
The contest, conducted online, was held in June, and participants were asked to propose a program aimed at ending world hunger.
The winning projects can be seen at www.youtube.com/watch?v=mP6iZEtSUEA. Each of the winners, from different schools in Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung and Magelang, were automatically offered placements at the University of Indonesia when they graduate next year.
