Homogenic performs again in Singapore

Some people say "the first cut is the deepest". Well, Homogenic proved that.

In our local electronic scene, Homogenic is a well-known band. They've been around since 2003, producing rare combinations of electronic music.

If you imagine that electronic music only consists of random beats and sketches from machines, then you're wrong. This band adds angelic voices to those components, making them a rare item in the scene.

Homogenic has already released two, Epic Symphony (2003) and Echoes of the Universe (2007). Their third album Let Thousand Flowers Bloom is on its way to being released soon.

All of their records have been released by FFWD Records, a leading name in our independent scene. The Bandung-based label has proven itself in their all-out effort to spread the word about their releases, even outside Indonesia.

The label has also taken Homogenic abroad. In May, they made their first international tour, playing an All-Indonesia series called Rockin' the Region: Indonesia, at Singapore's finest art complex, Esplanade-Theater on Bay.

They did very well in that series. A few days ago, they just did their second show at the same venue, playing on a bigger stage, the Baybeats Festival 2009.

"Homogenic had earlier performed for our On the Waterfront series for a program called Rockin' The Region: Indonesia and were very well-received," says Esther Masada, programming officer from The Esplanade, explaining why she chose to invite the band back.

And, of course, they made a good impression. They added to a list of Indonesian acts that have played at the festival in previous years. This list includes Everybody Loves Irene, Elemental Gaze and Rock N' Roll Mafia.

"We felt that they could benefit from more exposure as a band by playing on a larger festival platform such as Baybeats. The band plays a very interesting style of electronic music," Esther said.

Their long career has made them easy targets for good gigs like this.

"We didn't make such a big difference in our performance. We played the same songs for this gig; all of them are also played in our regular gigs in Indonesia," says Deena Dellyana, the band's main songwriter and synth player.

"Actually, the biggest concern was our outfit. We did a special arrangement for this gig because we had to impress the local audience who had probably never seen us before," she adds.

Besides Deena, the other members of the band are Risa Saraswati (vocals) and Grahadea Kusuf (programming).
