P

olice named Corruption Eradication Commission KPK) deputies Bibit Samad Riyanto and Chandra Hamzah suspects for their alleged involvement in a graft case at PT Masaro Radiokom.

National Police's director for Investigation Sr. Comr. Yopianus Mahar said, however, the two were not detained.

Previously, National Police Detectives Chief Comr. Gen. Susno Duadji said that the police would facilitate a confrontation between deputy leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and their suspended chief Antasari Azhar, following questioning sessions.

"Let us wait for the result of the questioning session by investigators," he said.

Confrontations between the accused and witnesses are usually conducted in order to dig deeper into a case.

Two KPK deputy leaders, Bibit Samad Rianto and Chandra M Hamzah, were questioned Tuesday for over 10 hours about alleged bribery related to the Masaro graft case and about KPK investigation procedures. As this report went to print Chandra was still being questioned.

It was their second questioning session after the one on Friday attended by all four deputy chiefs including Haryono Umar and Muhammad Yasin. All KPK deputy chiefs were questioned as witnesses.

One day earlier, four KPK officials were summoned to the National Police headquarters.

They were legal division chief Khaidir Ramly, investigation director Iswan Elmi, and investigators Arry Widiatmoko and Ronny Samtana.

Commenting on the questioning session, KPK spokesman Johan Budi acknowledged there was nothing special about the session.

"They are being questioned regarding authority abuse allegation while investigating the Masaro corruption case," he said.

One of Antasari's lawyers, Juniver Girsang, commented he would support the police's efforts to confront his client with the four deputy chiefs regarding the case, saying Antasari had nothing to hide in the first place.

"We will fully support attempts by the police to confront my client with his KPK colleagues," he said.

Antasari is currently being detained by the police for his alleged involvement in the premeditated murder of Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, director of a subsidiary of state-owned enterprise PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia.

During his detention, Antasari wrote a statement about his secret meeting with Anggoro Widjojo, a suspect of the Masaro graft case that had caused Rp 13 billion (US$1.31 million) of state losses through a project with the Forestry Ministry.

The meeting took place in Singapore last year and was mediated by businessman Ary Muladi and senior journalist Eddy Sumarsono, who are widely known as Antasari's friends.

In that meeting, Anggoro revealed he had earlier given a Rp 5.1 billion bribe through Ary Muladi to several KPK officials in order to halt the Masaro graft case investigation.
