hould you go seeking out the Kempi Deli, chances are your nose will pick up the location faster than your eyes.
It's a tad difficult to find, tucked away as it is amid the giant fashion brands of Chanel and Celine. Entering Grand Indonesia from the Rama Lobby, you can find the deli modestly standing in the corner near the elevators for the Kempinski Private Residence.
The Kempi Deli is Hotel Indonesia Kempinski's signature outlet for a wide selection of European breads and pastries, meat products and daily fresh selection of pasta and ragu from Casa D'Oro, the hotel's gourmet Italian restaurant.
The deli has, among others, Italian bread such as ciabatta - the white bread made from 100 percent wheat flour - and the flat fo-caccia with olives.
What the Americans call pretzel, the Kempi Deli presents as original twisted German-style Bavarian brezel: a dark-brown pastry sprinkled with coarse sea salt. Made from wheat flour, water, sugar and yeast, the brezel comes in sizes of 60 grams and 120 grams.
Other German breads include rogana, made from 60 percent rye and 40 percent wheat flour, with roasted malt powder, and German sourdough bread, made from 80 percent rye and 20 percent wheat flour, a homemade sourdough with mix of caraway, fennel, anis and coriander seeds.
The country loaf is a dark rye bread with homemade sourdough, a mix of coriander, fennel and anis seeds with roasted sunflower seeds and cream cheese. There's also the multi-cereal bread, with oatmeal, whole wheat, cashew nuts, raisins, sunflower and sesame seeds. It's made from 60 percent wheat flour, 15 percent white bread flour, 10 percent whole meal and 15 percent mix seeds and rye flakes.
Guests can dine at the small, cozy caf* for a quick snack, a leisurely lunch or dinner break, or simply have it to go. Those dining in can also complement their bread with a variety of cheese, jam and sausages, as well as red-herring salad and German potato salad, all available at the deli.
For a quick snack, there are several options, such as ciabatta with smoked salmon and creamy horseradish, baguette with tomato and buffalo mozzarella with pesto, mushroom quiche or schnitzel bread roll.
For guests with a sweet tooth, the deli has chocolates, cheesecakes and other sweet pastries. To celebrate Christmas, the Kempi Deli made decorated gingerbread houses, traditional Yule logs, traditional Christmas fruitcake with icing, small chocolate Santas and vanilla kipfel.
As the temperature of the deli is set low to keep all the food fresh, it might be wise to wear an extra layer or pick a seat near the entrance so you can thoroughly enjoy the dining experience there.
The Kempi Deli is open every day from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., making it a convenient option for guests wanting to grab a quick breakfast before rushing to school or the office. In the early morning, the outlet is accessible through an entry next to the Kempinski Private Residence drop-off lobby.
