Singer Sammy weeps, asks for rehab

JAKARTA: Pop band Kerispatih vocalist Samuel Hendra Simorangkir a.k.a. Sammy, who was arrested two months ago for drug abuse, burst into tears yesterday, asking the court to allow him into rehab.

“He wept when I met him. He asked me when he could go into rehab,” Sammy’s mother Tiur Ida Simanjuntak said, as quoted by kapanlagi.com. The 28-year-old singer was on trial at the South Jakarta District Court on Thursday.

Tiur claimed she had received a recommendation from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) suggesting Sammy go into rehab. “Since the BNN has already made such a recommendation, I think we do not need more trials.”

She was worried her son would give in to drugs again if he was jailed.

The band has dismissed Sammy and is now conducting an audition to find new vocalist.  — JP
