EMARANG: Mayor Soemarmo Hadi Saputro has urged Semarang's school canteens to sell local food, citing that Indonesia has abundant food resources.
"Students should be able to enjoy delicacies from the region's own food resources at school canteens. Local food is cheap and nutritious," he said at the launch of a food awareness campaign in Semarang on Saturday.
Soemarmo said that serving local food would give the students knowledge of the richness of local natural resources.
"Don't get accustomed to consuming instant food," he said.
Schools were encouraged to cultivate nearby spoiled lands. The newly-installed mayor also called upon the city's food reliance office to help the food awareness campaign. - JP
