ANGERANG: Two Iranians in a drug trial staged a protest Thursday against their prosecution by sewing their mouths together.

The Iranians, F. Fardin and J. Sohrab, who were charged with smuggling 555 grams of crystal metamphetamine or shabu-shabu, protested by sewing their mouths with needle and thread and refusing to talk during the trial, after learning their interpreters were not present for the court proceeding.

At the trial Wednesday, an interpreter provided by the Iranian Embassy, Maruan, skipped the session leaving the defendants with only one, Payam.

Fardin and Sohrab were apprehended by the Soekarno Hatta International Airport’s Custom and Excise officers on June 16 after shabu-shabu was found inside the soles of their footwear. They could face the death penalty if proven guilty. — JP
