URABAYA: Triyogi Yuwono was elected Wednesday as the rector of the Surabaya Institute of Technology (ITS), after he won a majority vote of the university’s senate.

He beat contender Priyo Suprobo of the university’s Civil Engineering School in the election, which was held during a closed senate meeting attended by all 102 members.

National Education Ministry Higher Education Director General Djoko Santoso also attended the meeting.

Triyogi, who is a professor of the university’s Industry Technology School, won 83.38 percent of the votes, comprising 44 votes from the National Education Ministry and 39 votes from the university’s Senate.

His incumbent and rival in the election, Priyo Suprobo, took 68.58 percent of the votes, comprising 8 votes from National Education Ministry and 60 votes from Senate.

Senate Secretary I Gusti Puru Raka had previously said the 106 Senate members represented 65 percent of the votes during the election, and the National Education Ministry 35 percent.

“So, the National Education Ministry has a strong bargaining position during the election,” he said as quoted by Antara news portal. — JP
