new chain of boutique resorts and beach clubs providing accommodation for surfers has launched a new project at the Keramas surf break in Gianyar regency.

The Komune Resort and Beach Club is set to build Keramas Surfing Park Resort, an entertainment and accommodation hub at the south-eastern coast of Bali, catering to surfers and travelers who enjoy the beach lifestyle.

Keramas will be its second site after the first one in Australia, the Komune Gold Coast located in Coolangatta in front of the world famous Kirra, Greenmount and Snapper Rocks surf breaks.

The Komune Gold Coast opened last year as a social and entertainment hub for the first round of the world surfing tour at the Quiksilver Pro in Australia in 2010.

The company has carefully selected its first sites in Australia and Bali fronting world-class surf breaks and will combine exotic eco-design, great beats and a friendly, community spirited atmosphere, Komune part owner Tony Cannon said during a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday.

“We choose Keramas because it’s a magical place and it’s a very famous surfing break, one of the best places to surf in Bali and in the world. Many international surfing contests have been held here.

“As surfers, we are here to combine and protect all the reasons international travelers love to visit Bali, for its culture, warm and friendly people and of course the waves.”

Part-owner Andrew Ladd said Komune would provide a variety of stylish accommodation options to suit all budgets of surfers and travelers, from share accommodation, bungalows, and luxury beach villas.

He said Komune has commissioned Italian Architect Giovanni D’Ambrosio, who has worked in Bali for the last 15 years to design the Balinese resort.

“The idea of using Giovanni is to design a very innovative but relaxed beach club and resort atmosphere both in the pool bar areas and in accommodation.”

“We want to create a place where guests and friends really want to meet and relax,” he said, adding that the design would be “an environmentally low impact green resort”.

The resort built on 3 hectares of land will be finished in stages, starting with the Beach Club and three Beach Villas tailored specifically to the needs of surfers, and is scheduled for completion in the next one and a half years.

Among the facilities in the resort are 12 single-storey bungalows, three villas, cottages, a beach club, swimming pool, spa and organic farm land.

“One quarter of the land would be converted into a vegetable and fruit farm, so we can grow plants produced for the customers,” Tony said.

Partners behind the Komune brand are keen surfers Tony Cannon, Tony de Leede, ex-World No. 2 Pro Surfer, Luke Egan, Indonesian National Adrial Sjahfrin and Andrew Ladd.

Tony said that the company would cooperate with local contractor PT Keramas Surfing Park and would work closely with Keramas local village.

“We have an agreement with them in employing locals. We also provide a share of the profits with the local people for the community.”
