16-year old girl in Kembangan, West Jakarta, died on Wednesday from a severe stab wound to her stomach hours before she was scheduled to attend her own birthday party.
Amanda Dewi Setiawan, a resident of Taman Kebon Jeruk, West Jakarta, and a student at IPEKA International Christian High School, was found unconscious on the side of a road by the school driver in Taman Meruya Ilir, West Jakarta.
Police said they suspected Amanda had been the victim of a robbery, because her BlackBerry smart phone, handbag and jewelries were not found on her.
Kembangan Police Precinct chief Comr. Dede Yudi said the stab wound in Amanda’s stomach indicated that she may have attempted to fight off her attacker.
A representative from Amanda’s school, deputy principal Kristhianto Nathanael Kainama, said Amanda might have been murdered while she was waiting for her mother to pick her up from school.
“Amanda usually waits for her mother after school,” Nathanael said as quoted by Tempointeraktif.com.
However, on Tuesday afternoon Amanda did not wait for her mother at their usual meeting point, but instead walked to a nearby housing complex behind the school.
“I suspect she was stabbed there,” Nathanael said.
Nathanael said Amanda had been found by one of the school’s drivers, Mamat, in Taman Meruya Ilir, West Jakarta, on Tuesday afternoon.
“Our driver was on the way to school and saw Amanda lying on the street and then took her to school,” Nathanael said.
Amanda died on the way to the nearby Siloam Hospital.
Amanda was to celebrate her 16th birthday on Wednesday.
Family and friends had prepared nasi kuning, a rice dish, for her birthday party.
“She asked for a cone-shaped rice dish for her birthday celebration,” Janice, a friend of Amanda’s, said.
Some of her friends had also bought her birthday gifts.
“This should have been a surprise for her. She is such a good friend,” another friend, Adel, said.
Dozens of family members and friends from her school gathered at Darmais Hospital in Slipi, West Jakarta, on Wednesday to pay their final respects to Amanda.
The gifts and the rice dish were given to Amanda’s parents, Jimmy Setiawan and Sioe Lin, who said they would place them beside her coffin.
