AKARTA: The Jakarta Police have arrested a Nigerian, identified only as J.W., for conning women on Facebook.
Jakarta Police spokesman Sr. Comr. Baharudin Djafar said that J.W. created a false identity on Facebook, claiming to be a Caucasian British soldier stationed in Afghanistan, and solicited money from his victims.
“He lured women into online relationships via Facebook and once his victims bought his stories the scam began,” Baharudin said. Head of the Jakarta Police cyber crimes unit Adj. Comr. Hermawan said the police began investigating the case after a complaint from one of the victims.
“The con artist said that he wanted to send US$5 million as gift to the victim, but asked the victim to send him $6,800 to pay customs to let it go through,” he added.
The police also arrested J.W.’s girlfriend, identified as Sanny, who used her bank account to receive the money from the victims.
