The National Police confirmed on Monday that a joint team had arrested graft fugitive Muhammad Nazaruddin in Cartagena, Colombia, early on Sunday.

National Police spokesman Insp. Gen. Anton Bachrul Alam said a team comprising five members of the national police, one from the immigration office and one from Interpol arrested Nazaruddin on Sunday at around 2 a.m. Colombia time.

“Our team arrested Nazaruddin, who used a fake passport and the name Safarudin,” Anton said Monday, adding that the team arrested Nazaruddin along with his wife and several other people. He said police had matched Nazaruddin’s fingerprints.

Nazaruddin had visited several countries since he left Indonesia in May, Anton said. Nazaruddin fled to Singapore for a medical treatment after he implicated in a bribery case linked to the construction of the 2011 SEA Games athlete’s dormitory in Palembang, South Sumatra.

When the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) named Nazaruddin a suspect, however, he was no longer in Singapore.

From Singapore, Nazaruddin allegedly attempted to give the impression he was heading to Kuala Lumpur, but in fact went to Vietnam and then Cambodia, Anton said.

Your comments

Dear policemen, I am a little happy about what you did. Finally you caught this corruption virus, Nazaruddin. Good job!

Now take his money and property and give it back to the people of Indonesia and put him in prison for about 10 years, which should be long enough to stop him from doing this again when he gets out of jail.

The money should use to build more schools in Indonesia or given to people living in poverty, rather than to buy weapons from Russia.

It’s better for our younger generations to be educated in how to read and write, rather than how to use a gun.

Pak policeman, you have worked hard to stop corruption, but you haven’t worked too hard to stop radical groups throughout Indonesia.

I would be very happy if you could stop these thugs from their unwanted behavior or if you could outlaw them. Stop their cruel behaviors because this is racism and they are criminals who are no good for anyone.

Again Pak policeman, if you can stop the radical groups from doing wrong things or whatever they want, I will give you the thumbs up ... really!

Finally, we got the fugitive. The chase is over and I hope this case can be resolved fairly.

In Colombia we have a new President, Juan Manuel Santos, who is struggling to fight corruption left by former president Alvaro Uribe.

Democracy has to minimize corruption in order to deliver progress and development to the people.

After taking an extra heart pill for the shock, I must congratulate the authorities for this arrest.

I wonder if he will make it safely back here as there must be a few people shaking in their boots about who he will also accuse of graft.

If he arrives home safely, there may be a few people in high places taking a similar “vacation”.

This is a great job by the National Police, if they can protect Nazaruddin from a mystery sniper. With his information, many people, particularly those involved in corruption, would likely feel happy if Nazaruddin were out of the picture.

Will the KPK follow up on Nazaruddin’s information about alleged corruption involving the upper eschelons of the Democratic Party?

I highly doubt that the KPK would dare to take them to court.

Only Nazaruddin will be a martyr, while the others go free. Prove it, KPK, if you dare. The public is waiting for your great job.

This was a good job by the National Police. Two thumbs up.
