AKARTA: The government plans to establish two technology institutes in Sumatra and Kalimantan, a minister says.
“We cannot reveal the cities [in which the institutes will be established],” National Education Minister Muhammad Nuh said, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com on Thursday.
The institutes will be the first of their kind outside the island of Java. Since independence, the country has only had two state-owned technology institutes, the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) and the Surabaya Technology Institute (ITS).
The minister said the country needed more engineers to support development, hence the establishment of such institutes was crucial. It is hoped that they can be established before 2014.
“So, we need to start preliminary development in 2012,” he said, adding that by 2014 the institutes would be able to accept students.
