AKARTA: A truck driver’s assistant who was learning how to drive struck and killed three toddlers in Cilincing, North Jakarta, on Saturday evening.

Alfin, 4, Ikbal, 4, and a third unidentified child were riding their bikes on a soccer field on Jl. Pantai Indah Ujung in Sukapura after a match when Agus, 31, allegedly hit them, North Jakarta traffic unit head Adj. Comr. Didiek Eko S. said on Sunday in Jakarta.

“He failed to notice that there were kids playing with their bikes in the middle of the field,” Didiek said, as quoted by Antara news agency.

A crowd mobbed the truck after the accident.

“The people destroyed the truck and set it on fire in the middle of the field,” Didiek said.

The driver and his assistant were saved from mob justice by police, who brought the pair to North Jakarta Police headquarters for questioning.
