ngry residents in Cilincing, North Jakarta, taunted and jeered a suspected double murderer, who reenacted his crimes at a lodging house in the neighborhood.
The residents also threw empty water cups at the suspect, R.A., 25, who was accused of murdering a woman whose body was found inside a box, and a girl, whose body had been stuffed inside a suitcase. He was arrested on Friday.
Dozens of police personnel were deployed hours before the reenactment to prevent angry residents from attacking the suspect.
Head of the violent crimes division of the Jakarta Police, Adj. Sr. Comr. Helmy Santika, said that the reconstruction was staged to find evidence based on statements made by R.A. and his accomplice in the murder, identified as K.
R.A. has been charged with not only killing the two females, who turned out to be mother and daughter, but also of raping the six-year-old girl before killing her. According to police, R.A. was assisted in the killings by his friend, K.
Jakarta Police general crimes division chief Sr. Comr. Gatot Eddy Purnomo said that R.A. killed the mother, 36-year-old Ertati, because she demanded he take responsibility for making her pregnant. “Her daughter was killed because she saw what he and K. had done to her mother,” Gatot added.
The two murders were the focus for headlines in local newspapers last week, as the city became the scene of the discoveries of three unidentified bodies found in gruesome conditions last weekend.
On Friday, Oct. 14, Ertati’s body was found inside a box in an alleyway in Koja, North Jakarta; stab wounds were found to her left and right torso. Police also found two photographs of a man in the box along with the body. Then the following day, police discovered the body of a young girl, recently identified as E.S., Ertati’s daughter, in a suitcase in Cakung in an appalling condition as it had started to decompose.
The police caught R.A. and K. at a factory where they worked in Sunter, North Jakarta, Gatot said.
He said that the murders took place on the night of Thursday, Oct. 13, at Ertati’s house in Sukapura, North Jakarta. The police have confirmed that besides facing demands of marriage from Ertati, R.A. had to deal with the fact that another girlfriend of his was also pregnant with his child.
Gatot added that earlier that Thursday evening, R.A. had told K. to come to his parents’ house in Koja, where he asked for his help.
“He asked K. to give his employer a doctor’s note saying he was ill and could not work the following day,” Gatot said.
R.A. then asked K. to meet him at Ertati’s house. Once there, R.A. had him take Ertati’s daughter outside so that he and Ertati could be alone.
R.A. allegedly killed Ertati after performing sexual intercourse. “The victim screamed for help; her daughter heard it and ran into the house, only to find her mother was already covered in blood,” Gatot said.
K. left the house shortly after. “When he had left, R.A. strangled E.S. to death while raping her,” Gatot said.
He then put E.S.’ body into the suitcase and Ertati’s into the box and added the two photographs to mislead the police.
