AKARTA: A 6-year-old boy named Ezra died on Thursday afternoon after he was hit by a container truck on Jl. Cakung-Cilincing in North Jakarta, a North Jakarta Police official said on Friday.

“The boy died after a container truck rammed the motorbike his father was driving. [The motorbike] was smashed by the truck’s rear wheel,” North Jakarta Police road accident unit head Adj. Comr. Didiek Eko Soemarno said.

Raymond Pinem, the boy’s father and a resident of East Semper district in Cilincing, allegedly tried to overtake the truck to make a U-turn. Both Raymond and Ezra were thrown from the motorbike. Raymond sustained several injuries while Ezra died on the way to Koja Hospital.

Didiek said that the truck’s driver, 43-year-old Muhammad Martin from Subang, West Java, was in police custody. “We are still investigating the case,” he said.

Jl. Cakung-Cilincing is notorious for its road accidents — especially those involving motorbikes and container trucks — due to its proximity to the Tanjung Priok harbor and several dense residential areas.
