ndonesia’s top diplomat reaffirmed the country’s commitment to not displacing Palestinians from war-torn Gaza, amid reports that Jakarta had already agreed to do otherwise, along with several other countries.

Appearing at a mass rally for the Palestinian struggle on Sunday at the National Monument (Monas) in Central Jakarta, Foreign Minister Sugiono gave an impassioned speech about Indonesia’s support for the people of Palestine amid Israel's continued campaign of mass starvation, bombing and shooting of civilians in the Gaza Strip.

The minister boldly highlighted the government’s opposition against genocide, weaponized starvation and any plans to relocate millions of Gazans to other countries, an act which would constitute ethnic cleansing.

“The government opposes the displacement of the Palestinian people from their homeland,” Sugiono said on Sunday, adding that the government will keep fighting for Palestine’s independence as a state.

The statement came amid a report by Israeli media Ynet last Thursday that Israel has reached agreements with five countries, including Indonesia, to relocate Gazans as part of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s push for the Gazans’ “voluntary migration”.

Previously in March, another Israeli media report claimed that a first group of 100 Gazans were set to be relocated to Indonesia.

The Foreign Ministry at the time quickly shot down the reports, with then-spokesperson Rolliansyah “Roy” Soemirat saying that the government “never discussed with any party or heard information about the plan as mentioned by foreign media”.
