AKARTA: Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Mari Elka Pangestu has revealed that the competitiveness of Indonesian tourism improved from a ranking of 81 in 2009 to 74 in 2011, out of 139 countries.
“This was a good spur for the further development of Indonesian tourism”, she said on Thursday as quoted by antaranews.com.
Despite the improvement, however, Indonesia ranked far below other ASEAN countries like Singapore (16), Malaysia (32) and Thailand (42).
She said the lack of competitiveness among professionals in the tourism industry plus the lack of capacity and quality in research and development had hampered the development of tourism in the country.
The number of foreign tourists visiting Indonesian in 2011 reached 7.6 million people, slightly lower than the target of 7.7 million people.
The 7.6 million foreign tourists in 2011 was an 8.5 percent increase from last year’s figure.
