Vice President Boediono said the country’s tsunami early warning systems were in dire need of immediate repair in order to be able to serve the public’s right for any earthquake information. The statement was made following the discovery that some of the early-warning system’s utilities were already broken.

“I still hear that there are a number of problems, such as sirens that don’t work or buoys that haven’t been connected to any satellites. This needs to be immediately repaired,” Boediono said on a train ride between Kualanamu in North Sumatra and Medan, Antara news agency reports.

Boediono, along with several ministers, had reviewed the impact of the Aceh earthquake. He said that Wednesday’s quake can be a lesson for other quake-prone regions.

It’s sad that our government has no good operating and maintenance procedures.

This is typical for government installations: Operation and maintenance funds are budgeted, allocated and then pocketed.

Operation and maintenance is often difficult to verify, hence the many opportunities to steal public funds.

Then there is the collusion between the state auditors and the agencies responsible. How many lives will this cost?

Early-warning systems for tsunamis must be part of our science curriculum in the universities in
Indonesia because the coastal areas along the Indian Ocean belong to tsunami-prone regions.

There must be many scientists with expertise in earthquakes and tsunamis from Indonesia, so such installment of early-warning systems for tsunamis must have been designed and installed by native Indonesians.

We are supposed to be responsible for the maintenance of such equipment because that equipment will save so many innocent lives.

Make sure that the personnel appointed for such endeavors are responsible and qualified people.

Not the ones who are closely related to the ruling political parties as they are the ones who tend to
be corrupt.
