Comments: Expatriate demand sends condo rentals up

A

ug. 23, p. 1

Strong demand from expatriates, in particular from Europe, India, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and the US, has propelled apartment rental rates up by 14.61 percent compared with the same period last year, a Bank Indonesia (BI) survey shows.

The BI survey shows a sharp increase in rental rates for upscale apartments in Jakarta, as expatriates prefer to rent apartments near business districts in the capital, while the supply in such areas is limited.

I quote: “Of course, there should be strong measures in place...”

Are there strong measures in place in Australia and America, where Indonesians are permitted to buy apartments, houses and land?

No!

Are we going to steal the houses and land and take them away? No!

While living/working in Indonesia, I encountered this issue numerous times. It seemed that if an owner saw a white expatriate inspecting the property, the price rose by 30-40 percent.

My remedy for this was to have my Indonesian wife, or an informed Indonesian, actually rent the place for me, then I would move in. You should have seen the angry faces when these people found out that a European was living there.
