outh Sumatra Governor Alex Noerdin inaugurated the country's first ever gas-powered electricity plant (PLTG) in Jakabaring, Palembang, on Monday afternoon.
The plant was built by state-owned utility PT PLN (Persero) and its local counterpart, PT Perusahaan Daerah Pertambangan and Energy (PDPE), a mining and energy company owned by the South Sumatra government.
'After Palembang, several other PLTGs will become operational in Jambi and Pasuruan [East Java] this year,' said PLN president director Nur Pamuji after the project's inauguration.
The PLTG would function as a back-up power station during the peak hours of 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., local time.
'Currently, the amount of electricity need in Palembang during peak hours reaches 422 megawatts while electricity load in South Sumatra stands at around 686 megawatts; so, this gas-powered electricity plant can become one solution during the peak hours,' said PDPE president director, Caca Isah Saleh.
The location of the US$ 10 million Jakabaring CNG Storage is considered strategic due to its proximity to a gas pipeline owned by state-run oil and gas company PT Pertamina. (ebf)
