resident Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono instructed National Police Gen. Timur Pradopo and Attorney General Basrief Arief to meet him at Halim Perdanakusuma airport to discuss prosecutors'failure to put graft convict and former National Police detectives chief Comr. Gen. (ret) Susno Duadji in prison.
The President summoned the two officials shortly after he arrived from a five-day foreign visit.
'I have just been briefed by the attorney general and National Police chief on the issue surrounding Susno's sentence that has been in the spotlight over the last several days,' Yudhoyono told a press conference after the meeting.
'My instructions to both of them were short: enforce the law as fair and as appropriately as possible,' he added.
The President further said, 'People always want the law enforced and justice upheld. They want the government, including police and prosecutors, to carry out their jobs properly. That's what I told them. The rest will be explained by the National Police chief and the attorney general.'
Both Timur and Basrief, who accompanied the President at the press briefing, declined to comment.
'We will reschedule [putting Susno in prison]. We'll see,' said Basrief when asked when Susno would be taken to prison.
He did not respond when asked about Susno's whereabouts.
Susno remains free despite the Supreme Court upholding in November last year a guilty verdict with a three-and-a-half-year prison term for graft. (ebf)
