he centralgovernment and the Aceh provincial administration are still engaged in adialogue to settle a dispute on Aceh'€™s official flag, which resembles thedefunct Free Aceh Movement (GAM), despite an expired deadline for theresolution of the dispute, says an official.

During last week'€™smeeting in Jakartabetween Home Minister Gamawan Fauzi and Aceh Governor Zaini Abdullah, both parties agreed to form a team of seven members to settle theproblem.

Both teams are setto meet today in Batam.

Home Ministryspokesman Reydonnyzar Moenek said on Tuesday that follow up
meetings were to beheld on May 14, 24 and 31.

'€œDespite our strongintention to encourage them [the provincial administration] to comply withGovernment Regulation No.77/2007 on regional symbols, we are trying to findcommon ground to address the matter,'€ Reydonnyzar said.

Through Bylaw No.3/2013, the Aceh provincial administration approved the use of the GAM'€™screscent and star flag and the Bouraq symbol as the official flag and symbol ofthe province, which went into force on March 25.

The Acehadministration has based its position on the Helsinki memorandum of understanding (MoU),which states that the province may have its own flag and coat of arms dueto its special status. (dic)
