The airport in Wamena, Papua, has been closed after a Nusantara airlines cargo plane caught fire on Wednesday, an official has said.

'€œAll flights in the airport are temporarily halted today, and it is hoped that it can resume operation tomorrow,'€ Lt.Col. Yusuf Sampetoding, a local military commander on the scene, said in a text message.

Officials said that the fire started when diesel fuel came into contact with an open flame as it was unloaded from the aircraft.

The aircraft'€™s fuel tank soon exploded, injuring two and damaging the aircraft.

Co-pilot Vincensius Ryan Perkasa, 31, sprained his knee while Chris Wetipo, 23, an airport worker, suffered from minor burns. (nai/ebf)
