ormer vice president Jusuf Kalla was re-elected as chairman of the Centrist Asia Pacific Democrats International (CAPDI) for a third time at the second CAPDI International Conference in Makassar, South Sulawesi, on Tuesday.

CAPDI members re-elected Kalla as the 2013-2017 chairman by acclamation as he is considered to have extensive experience and commitment in peace building both in Indonesia and other countries.

Kalla is also seen as a figure who has good relations with other countries, in particular those in conflict such as Myanmar and Palestine. The former vice president has been praised not only as a political figure but also as an economic leader and peace builder.

'€œJusuf Kalla has a high commitment and desire on peace building. This is in line with the mission of CAPDI as an organization that wants to shape future political leaders in Asia and cross-border communities,'€ said CAPDI president Jose de Venecia after the closing of the conference on Tuesday.

Apart from selecting a new chairman for the next four years, the meeting participants also formulated 21 points of agreement that will become the focus and work programs of the organization. The agreements were formulated in the Makassar Declaration.

The declaration was signed by 39 CAPDI members, including Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen and his deputy, Sok An; Kalla; former Philippine president Fidel Ramos; former Nepalese prime minister Madhav Kumar; and former Philippine parliament speaker Jose de Venecia. (ebf)
