Artists use street murals to fight corruption

A

rtists in big cities like Yogyakarta, Jakarta, Aceh, Bandung,Semarang, Kendal, Malang and Surabaya, have pledged to use murals in public spaces as a way to the fight corruption ahead of next year'€™s GeneralElections.

'€œHere we are also witness to how corruption has failed the ideals of the reform movement,'€ Sigit, an artist, said on Thursday.

Sigit and dozens of other artists in Yogyakarta painted murals on a wall located at the Pingit intersection in Yogyakarta. They painted the faces of the country'€™s political elites who have been implicated in graft cases such as former youth and sports minister Andi Mallarangeng, former Democratic Party treasurer Muhammad Nazaruddin, former lawmaker Angelina Sondakh and former taxman Gayus Tambunan.

Sigit said they decided to paint murals instead of organizing mass rallies because they believed that
the murals would be more effective.

Agus Sarwono from Transparency International Indonesia'€™s community engagement division said that the decision to use murals as a tool to fight corruption was the result of a two-day workshop on enforcing visual propaganda to fight political corruption that was held in Jakarta in early May. (dic)
