Jambi province had a 1.28 percent drop in passes in the national exam for junior high school students.

'€œOverall, the pass percentage has declined by 1.3 percent from 99.8 percent in 2012 to 98.5 percent this year,'€ said Suagino, an official from Jambi education agency, on Saturday.

He said 721 of almost 50,000 junior high school students failed the exams this year, up from only 88 last year.

Suagino said 413 of just over 35,000 students from junior high schools did not pass the exams. Students from Madrasah Tsanawiyah or Islamic junior high schools did even worse, with 2.4 percent of more than 12,700 failing.

'€œNone of 217 students from open junior high schools (SMP Terbuka) failed the exams,'€ said Suagino.

The pass percentage for senior high school students showed a similar decline. (asw/ebf)
