A policeman in Bukittinggi, Padang, West Sumatra, has shot one of his colleagues in self defense.

Bukittinggi Police deputy Chief Comr. Arif Budiman said that one of his men, identified as Brig. E, went berserk at the headquarters demanding immediate payment of his salary for the last four months.

"His salary has not been paid because he has not been on duty for the last few months," Arif said as quoted by tempo.co on Tuesday.

E came to the headquarters on Monday with a machete and threatened the treasurer.

Arif, who was not present, received a phone from First Insp. Khairul, about the chaotic situation at headquarters.

"I immediately returned to the office," Arif said, where he saw E swinging a machete in the yard.

"I told him to put the machete down. Instead, he challenged me into a fight," Arif said.

Arif then fired a warning shot. "He backed down for a while but suddenly attacked me and I shot him on his right leg," he said.
