The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) set a high vote and seat target for the 2014 elections.

PDI-P central board chairperson, Puan Maharani, said that according to the results of the party'€™s national meeting (Rakernas) held in Ancol, North Jakarta, from Sept. 6-8, PDIP was aiming to obtain over 20 percent of the vote at the 2014 legislative election. She said the target was appropriate.

'€œConcerning the target for the legislative election, the PDI-P is targeting 27.02 percent of votes or 152 seats at the House of Representatives,'€ said Puan when reading out the results of the Rakernas PDI-P in Ancol, Jakarta, on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The head of PDI-P faction at the House asserted that such a high target was set because of the 2008 Presidental Election Law, which only allowed a party to nominate a presidential candidate if it garnered a minimum 20 percent of votes during the legislative election.

'€œThe target was determined through a calculation that concerned several important variables,'€ Puan said.

The Rakernas PDI-P also decided that PDI-P chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri would determine the president and vice president candidates.

The meeting agreed that '€œthe names of the president and vice president candidates will in line with the party'€™s political dynamics and ideology'€. (ebf)
