The elevator accesses the top of the monument from which visitors can take in the city from 132 meters above the ground.
Monas management head Rini Haryani said that the 10-year-old elevator had been used an average 160 times a day since it was installed.
'The elevator has carried 4.36 million visitors since 2003,' Rini said on Thursday.
Jakarta Tourism Agency facilities division head Maryanto said that a new elevator was needed to guarantee the safety of visitors.
'The lift has been used heavily over the past years ' it's time to replace it,' Maryanto said.
The city has set aside Rp 4 billion (US$352,000) from the 2013 city budget to fund the project.
Rini gave assurances, however, that other tourism attractions in the Monas compound, such as the museum, would remain open.
