At least six people were killed when a ferry carrying 60 passengers capsized in the Musi River in Palembang, South Sumatra, on Friday.

The vessel, on its way from Palembang's Ampera port to Banyuasin, sank after hitting a steel pole used to support a pontoon near a fertilizer factory operated by PT Pusri.

Palembang Police spokesman Adj. Comr. Benni Wijaya said the vessel's captain apparently did not see the pole as it was hidden below the water's surface during high tide.

Four of the six victims were identified as Dian Lestari, 29, Fahri, 7, Mahdalena, 48, and Sri Kadar Wati, 40.
