'Australia only wants to wash its hands [of the matter] and dump its problem on Indonesia. What they have done is not in line with the principle of being a good neighbor,' Hikmahanto Juwana of the University of Indonesia said on Tuesday.
'Indonesia is also highly burdened because we will have to take care of boat people who always want to go to Australia. We suffer not only financially but also socially as well as in terms of international reputation,' he said in a statement.
He called such a move a serious breach of Indonesia's sovereignty and urged the government to lodge a protest.
The East Nusa Tenggara Police said on Monday they had found 45 undocumented migrants from Africa and the Middle East aboard a boat adrift in the province's Rote Ndao waters after it failed to reach Australia.
The Indonesian Navy confirmed that the boat had been pushed back by the Australian navy before it reached Rote Island.
