he Lampung branch of the Indonesian Forum for theEnvironment (Walhi) has slammed the South Lampung administration's plan tocarry out a mitigation program at Mount Anak Krakatau.
South Lampung Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) head M. Saleh previously said that the mitigation program was aimed at reducing the impact of volcanic eruptions to the regency.
'We will discuss this mitigation issue with the South Lampung development Planning Board [Bappeda], volcanologists and councilors,' said Saleh.
Walhi member Mukri Friatna said on Friday that such a program might give way to illegal sand mining.
'A few years ago, then-South Lampung regent Wendy Melfa conducted this program. But in the end, it increased sand mining activities around the volcano. The program was stopped due to protests from residents,' Mukri said.
