he search for four missing climbers on Mount Bawakaraeng in Gowa regency, South Sulawesi, is still ongoing as no concrete leads have been found.
The climbers, which have been missing for three days, are all students from Makassar ' Sangkala, 17, from state vocational school SMK Negeri 7; and Muhammad Setiawan Ramadhan, 16; Muhammad Andra Pratama Putra, 17; and Aldi, 17, are all from private senior high school SMU Mahaputra.
The four students began their ascent on Jan. 12. However, missing person's reports were only filed on Thursday.
'We received a report on the missing climbers on Thursday afternoon. The search began on Friday,' said Adolfina Rante Padang, a member of the search and rescue (SAR) team from Hasanuddin University, Makassar, on Sunday.
The four students should have returned to base camp on Tuesday; the climb should only take three days, or four days at the most.
It was said that the four climbers did not report their climbing trip to the climbing station official in Lembanna, causing a delay in the filing of the missing of person's report which is likely to affect the success of the rescue operation.
'The situation is really unsafe due to heavy rain and strong winds on the mountain. The climbing trip should not have gone ahead,' Adolfina said, adding that the students would have now run out food. (ebf)
