he input of clean water for processing in Jakarta has fallen by 6 cubic meters per second because of a reduction of supply through the Kali Malang canal from the Jati Luhur dam due to major flooding in Bekasi, West Java.
"Normally the water input reaches 17 cubic meters per second, but now it is reduced to only 11 cubic meters per second," Wildan, an official at a crossing between the canal and the Bekasi River, said on Tuesday as quoted by tempo.co.
The reduction of water supplies from the Jati Luhur dam, which is managed by state company Jasa Tirta II, was conducted in order to reduce the overflow from the canal into the Bekasi River amid the flooding.
The reduction was made because water from the canal was overflowing at the crossing, where a siphon project is being built. The siphon project is designed to facilitate the flow of water from the dam along the canal to Jakarta.
Wildan said the water in the canal was used by two water companies in three areas, namely Buaran, Pulogadung and Pejompongan. 'The first two are managed by water company Aetra and the other one, in Pejompongan, by Palija," he said without providing details as to when the water supplies would return to normal. (krb)
