Death toll in Jakarta flooding rises to 23

The Jakarta Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) says the number killed during Jakarta's flooding this rainy season has increased to 23.

'€œThe death toll from flooding in Jakarta has continued to increase, now reaching 23, up from 13 last week,'€ said BPBD Jakarta'€™s head of informatics and disaster control directorate, Bambang Surya Putra Sunday as quoted by Antara news agency.

Eleven of the people killed in the flooding were from East Jakarta, five were from North Jakarta, three from Central Jakarta, three from West Jakarta and one from South Jakarta.

Several of the victims had drowned in rivers and storm drains while others died from illnesses. Several others had been electrocuted from damaged electrical conduits.

'€œWe urge flood victims to remain careful, especially when there are dangling cables,'€ said Bambang.

Entering the second week, floodwaters in Jakarta have started to recede as rainfall has grown less intense following weather modification operations conducted by the Jakarta administration together with the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (BPPT).

As of Sunday, the number of evacuees in 150 evacuation locations was reported at 38,079. (ebf).
