he United Development Party (PPP) has declared that its chairman Suryadharma Ali is its potential presidential candidate for the 2014 election at the party's second national meeting (Mukernas) in Bandung, West Java, on Feb.7 and 8.
Meeting organizing committee chief Lukman Hakim Syarifuddin said three crucial points had been agreed upon by the PPP's executive board and 33 regional executive board chairpersons who attended the meeting.
'The Mukernas II PPP has unanimously instructed its best cadre, Dr. H. Suryadharma Ali, to accept the decision to potentially be the party's presidential candidate for the 2014-2019 term,' said Lukman in his remarks at the meeting, which coincided with the party's 41st anniversary on Sunday, as quoted by kompas.com.
Besides discussing Suryadharma's candidacy at the meeting, people's aspirations for national leadership were also discussed. Several people were considered credible possible contenders for the presidential election. These included former vice president Jusuf Kalla, Jakarta Governor Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo, Muhammadiyah chairman Din Syamsuddin, National Awakening Party (PKB) politician Khofifah Indar Parawansa, East Kutai Regent Isran Noor and former Constitutional Court chief justice Jimly Asshiddiqie.
'The Mukernas II PPP has instructed the national leadership meeting, together with the party's leaders, to jointly decide and announce the party's presidential and vice presidential ticket for 2014-2019 after the legislative election on April 9,' said Lukman.
The Mukernas II PPP was expected to announce a definite presidential candidate, but apparently shelved the idea. (ebf)
