Steak 21 restaurant on the third floor of Plaza Semanggi in South Jakarta caught fire at around 3:30 p.m. Monday.
No casualties were reported from the incident.
Staff and visitors were alerted to the fire by a cloud of smoke billowing from the restaurant. The pungent smell of burned rubber could be detected on the upper ground floor.
It took security guards one hour to successfully extinguish the flames.
Setiabudi Police chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Tri Suhartanto said that based on a preliminary investigation in addition to witnesses accounts, the fire was started by a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)-powered fryer in the kitchen.
Tri said the fire caused damaged in the area surrounding the fryer.
"There was only one member of staff in the kitchen at the time," he said. "The fire was quickly extinguished.'
Tri said that after electrician and LPG technicians' examinations, the building was declared safe once again.
The police would investigate whether the incident was the result of human error or a faulty device.
